Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)

What you should know about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)

There are various infections that can be contacted via sexual contact ranging from all forms of micro-organisms (i.e. viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa) to the most feared HIV.

Getting infected with these diseases are linked to an individual’s sexual practices, personal hygiene and level of information

In an age where information is at everyone’s finger tips, protection (use of condoms) during intercourse is not new especially for a partner you are unsure of their sexual history.
Unprotected sex is the most common means of transmitting STI’s and symptoms could be early or late. Such symptoms could range from, pungent vaginal discharge of unusual color, itching, painful urination, sores around the genital area to not having any symptoms such as in the case of HIV/AIDS.
To prevent STI’s, it is important to avoid unprotected sex at all times and by all means maintain one sexual partner. It is also important to know your HIV status and your partner’s before taking important steps at intimacy and marriage.
Sexually transmitted infections can be treated and HIV can be properly managed. It is advised that if an individual is diagnosed of having a STI the partner should be treated also.

Prompt treatment of STI is important because if they are neglected or poorly treated, the individual could have serious complications that could cause future problems and for women, affect their ability to get pregnant or affect their pregnancy.
